CARGO START’s Partner for Sustainability CARBON CARE Receives ISO 14083:2023 Certification

1 September 2023

On 1st September 2023, the Swiss company CarbonCare released a new version of its multimodal CO2 calculator in compliance with ISO 14083:2023, a formally recognized global standard for logistics emissions. The relaunch of the calculator, marketed in Italy by CARGO START, includes enhanced functionalities, to further support logistics players in the assessment, compensation and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

The ISO 14083 Norm

Good news on the front of environmental sustainability: CARGO START’s partner company and provider of the door-to-door, multimodal logistics CO2 emissions calculator CarbonCare, has received the ISO 14083:2023 certification.

The much-awaited ISO norm « Greenhouse gases — Quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions arising from transport chain operations », published in March 2023 and based on the principles of the GLEC Framework 2.0., defines a benchmark for the measurement and management of CO2 emissions from freight activities across the logistics industry,

The ISO 14803 validation, issued by the leading certification company SGS, entails the replacement of the EN1685 as the basis of CarbonCare’s calculation method, to provide a higher level of consistency and accuracy and enable logistics providers to make more informed and climate-friendly decisions to improve their environmental performance.

The new calculation method at a glance

The new calculation method encompasses the entire transport chain, providing a comprehensive view of GHG emissions throughout the process. This entails the introduction of more detailed CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) values, including Total Emissions (TOT), Operational Emissions (OPS), Energy Provision (ENE), and Emission Intensity (EI).

More in general, the ISO-based calculation puts a stronger focus on total emissions rather than on single operations, which facilitates carbon offsetting and reporting – and ensures better accuracy thereof. In addition, the calculations will reflect the most up-to-date emission factors and include essential elements such as “Cooling” (Reefer) and “Refrigerant Leaking.”

The new version of the calculator, which can be easily integrated into any TMS via API (available in a 3.0 version as of 1st September 2023), also comes with improved functionalities providing more detailed and enhanced results for the various modes of transport and enabling to identify problems in case of calculation errors.

A significant milestone on the pathway to a “Net Zero” logistics sector

CARGO START signed a reseller agreement with CarbonCare in 2020 to underline its commitment to greater sustainability in the logistics industry. The calculator has also been integrated into the visibility platform StarTracking to enable freight forwarders to visualize the carbon footprint of every single shipment at Airport-to-Airport level.

Peter Somaglia, CEO & Co-Founder of CarbonCare comments: “We are proud of the ISO certification and we are convinced that the new standard will finally scale up collective efforts by providing a unique tool to track and report progress toward reducing emissions and by setting an important milestone on the pathway to a ‘Net Zero” logistics sector’.

«CarbonCare is one of the most viable technologies in the market for the measurement and compensation of the logistics footprint», says Emanuele Vurchio, Managing Director at Cargo Start. “Thanks to the new ISO 14083 compliance, we are confident that this tool will enable our customers to make even more “sustainable” decisions before planning their shipments.”
